The practical answer

Use an monitor-setting retention (EDID)-capable KVM with USB 3.x and enough video headroom. For a MacBook-plus-PC desk, iDock M10 avoids Multi-Stream Transport (MST) mirroring. For two desktop-style hosts, HDK202-M24 gives the most connector flexibility.
