The practical answer

The Mac mini can feed a desktop-style dual-monitor KVM with two independent outputs. Choose the KVM around the monitors: HDMI for an all-HDMI desk, DisplayPort for a DP desk, or the mixed HDK model where the two display inputs differ.

Compatibility constraints

  • The KVM expects one host-side video connection per monitor.
  • Adapter capability controls the maximum refresh available from Thunderbolt ports.
  • A USB-C Multi-Stream Transport (MST) dock is unnecessary for the Mac mini and may introduce mirroring limits.

Recommended setup sequence

  1. List each monitor's preferred input and target refresh.
  2. Map the Mac mini HDMI and Thunderbolt outputs to those inputs.
  3. Choose the KVM whose connector layout minimises adapters.
  4. Test both displays, high dynamic range (HDR) and wake behaviour before mounting the KVM.
